The Richland Bombers defeated the Puyallup Vikings to win the 2009 Washington State 4A Baseball Title by a score of 4-3.
The vaunted Richland Bombers who going in had 3 rings in 5 Title Game appearances, made it 4 rings in 6.
While not physically intimidating, save UW bound Cody Shepherd, Coach Ben Jacobs Bombers win by playing the game the right way, not losing their cool and not beating themselves. Top that off with a solid group of arms and its no wonder why Richland is here year in and year out.
Lefty Kyle Stumetz started things off in the first by shutting down the top of the order for the Viks. In their half, base-menace Jamison Rowe would parlay a walk into a stolen base, advancing on a past ball to third, and scoring on a Dan Jacobs sacrifice.
MVP and State Player of the Year candidate Brett Jacobs would beat out a chopped single for what would turn out to be 1 of Richland's 3 hits for the game.
Solid infield play from Shepherd, the Jacobs cousins, and Seattle U bound Eric Yardley would spell doom for Puyallup.
The play of the game had to be the ball hit to Richland Right Fielder Chris Cecil. Cecil saw it well off the bat and took on the right field wall for as gritty a big-game catch as Bomber fans could stomach.
