I’ll only be able to post for Richland Freshman as my son plays for Richland, but I’ll be as unbiased as a parent can. The beauty of having your child go through grid-kids is that you’re able to learn the names of the athletes on many teams. The bonus is when you see them continue onto high school where they’re smarter, more experienced, bigger, faster, etc. During the spring football camp held at Hanford High, I was most impressed with the freshman coaching staff of Kennewick. They were passionate and took the time on the sidelines to explain things individually to their players. Their team’s performance showed and in my opinion, they had the best outing. I was also very impressed with the energy and effort shown by Hermiston.
Week 1 Richland –vs- Pasco. Final score 19-16. Richland’s defense and running attack almost mirror images the varsity team while the Pasco’s QB is possibly the most accurate throwing player I’ve witnessed all year. Keep your eye on Clifton Lozano (a.k.a. Snoop). From grid-kids on, he’s marveled most that have watched his dynamic play. Pasco needs to ensure that this doesn’t become a 1 horse race. The grid-kids team and now the frosh team have decided that if they’re not winning, give the ball to Snoop and he’ll win it for us. Exceptional as he is, he’s still one man and a good defense will neutralize him most of the game.
Week 2 Richland –vs- Hanford. Final score 36-14. Hanford has huge lineman and an exceptional receiver in Ben Kelly. They have two QB’s that offer different abilities, and #44 “Will” has been another grid-kid standout that is much faster, bigger, and stronger than most linebackers attempting to tackle him. I don’t know why the score was so lopsided.
Richland has huge depth and talent. They field 58 athletes. They have two QB’s that would start at other schools. They have 5 quality running backs and the same number of linebackers. They have 4 receivers/DB’s that catch most things thrown their way. The line is a bit undersized compared to the other lines they’ve faced this year, but they are so well trained that they almost dominate their area. Without question if this team stays together, they will be contenders in a few years. The one problem I see is the current coaching staff plays their starting 11 even when they have a 30 point lead. How can you have quality depth when your 2nd and 3rd string has limited experience?
From what I witnessed at the Hanford conditioning camp, the freshman game for September will be on the 30th at 5p.m. when Chiawana hosts Richland. Other than Lozano, the rest of the McLoughlin 4x1 track relay team is on the football team. Prediction Richland 21 Chiawana 14
